The state of California is just 162 years old, but in many ways the accumulation of information that documents all that has happened in this relatively short amount of time provides a story that is very engaging.  In part, that story has been visually captured by California artists from the past and present.  These artist chose to produce works that capture scenes of the period and culture in which they lived.  This art tradition dates back to when the state was founded in 1850.
The first chapter of this book presents an illustrated overview of California Scene Paintings that were produced between 1850 and 2012.  Select images from each era provide examples of how the subject matter of this art evolved in response to the many changes that were taking place in California.
The second chapter focuses on California Scene Paintings produced between 1930 and 1970.  The art is categorized by date from early to most recent, beginning with the 1930s and 1940s when this type of art was at its peak of popularity in California and in all other parts of America.
The third and final chapter presents an introduction to California Scene prints and drawings from the 1930s and 1940s.  These works were exhibited along with the California Scene oil paintings and watercolors during that era.
